I was thinking of a potential change to the way the leaderboard is calculated, and I wanted to see what you guys thought. Here is my idea:

Lets say a user gets first place in a game. He gets 20 points for that score on the leaderboard. Now, someone else beats him, but it doesn't take away his original 20 points, it just gives the new guy 20 points.

This method will reward people who have been at your site for a long time, by allowing them to accrue more points. This method will also make people want to jump on new games and play them, so that they can quickly get a good score in it so that they can grab some points.

This method would also allow us to track how many first places a user has gotten since the beginning of their account. A user might have 100 first places over 3 years at your site, or something like that.

What do you guys think?

in past my site was with php-fusion. members get points for every thing they do, like 2 points for forum entry, 5 points they play game (3 points costs game), 1 point every shout. ok, it was really ok, but now myy members say this way with puarcade rating is really better.

I think there is no point () of getting points for a first place on a new game if you're the first to play it. Even if that makes new games really attractive. I like people to loose points when they get beaten.

My problem with the leaderboard is much like I can not use it.
It takes 45 seconds (just counted) to display, caching or not.

Now my site main competition is about getting as many first places as they can, using the pu arcade champion module...

I will repeat (as I never got replies on this point), on 2.1.1, I used pu arcade leaderboard on my mainpage, displayin top 50 + many other stuff, and displaying instantly... (I was using miro's nice little pustats component with leaderboard on mainpage)

My users don't know about moving from 1.0x to 1.5 of course but caus of that lost leaderboard, they feel like the arcade has been downgraded...

i'm using svn358 on j1.5 with php5 and mysql 5... what else?

If it is taking that long, there is probably something wrong. Do you have the indexes applied? I've seen a couple installs where the indexes couldn't get applied because there were duplicate records. If this happens, the leaderboard works really slowly.

The problem is that the 2.1.1 leaderboard worked better for some, and the 2.2.1 leaderboard works better for others. It all depends on where your host puts in limitations - whether it be script execution time, querty timeout, cpu quotas, etc.
